RAMBOSHIRE

I wrote up a brief report for Whittaker before he left with the other constables, Blake Willshore, and the laptop to be processed for prints. The culprit refused to say anything, but I suggested if the detective played it like the Cayman Islands had an unpredictable and corrupt legal system, then I was sure he’d start blabbing. Which of course wasn’t true about our police or courts, but all he had to do was get Blake to believe it was and the little drittsekk would soil his shorts. Also, if we could tie him and his theft to the US publisher, then we could hand the case over to the US authorities and not have it burden our system.

Lahana grinned at me like a Hampshire cat. That might be the wrong English county, but they have too many shires to keep them straight.

“You know, I could just follow you around all the time and fill the newspaper with articles,” she said, which I didn’t take as a compliment despite her amusement.

“How about you tell me why a crew member on a chartered megayacht would risk everything by pinching a laptop he could have nabbed from almost any tourist in any port?”

I shrugged. “Maybe Whittaker will find out in the interview,” was all I would tell her. “Check with the station in the morning.”

She shook her head. “I gotta work over Christmas like you. Least you could do is throw me a bone.”

I wanted to tell Lahana the truth because I liked her, and she was right. We were both stuck working instead of enjoying ourselves with family, but I couldn’t. The tie to the competing publisher was nothing more than a family connection. We currently had no hard evidence, so until Blake admitted to it, or we found emails or texts to support our theory, there was no way we needed a rumour getting out in the press. Lahana soon gave up on me and moved on to chatting with the guests some more. For many of them, it would be a fun novelty to have their names in the paper. I tried to keep my name out of the headlines.

Gabriel offered to stay with me on duty for the night, or even take the shift, but I lied and told him my nap had freshened me up enough to carry on. Now all the drama was over, I figured I might be able to sneak another nap in the night, anyway. Helen, who was a few inches shorter than me, but otherwise about my size, kindly lent me a pair of black leggings and a lightweight sweatshirt with the Maureen logo across the chest. The leggings were more like capris on my long legs, and I turned down a T-shirt offer, throwing the sweatshirt on over my sports bra instead. None of it aligned with the RCIPS guidelines for dress on duty, but it was that or a nicer outfit from Lisa that definitely wouldn’t fit my tall, lean frame.
